Connecting Two Computers Using Switch

Do you want to connect your two computers and you have no idea how to do it? This guide will help you to solve your problem.

First we need a hub or switch and two patch cords.

Switch:

Patch Cord:

If you now have the materials, let's do this diagram:

1. Physical Connection

Attach the end of patch cord to the LAN port of your computer. The LAN port is located at the back side of  the system unit as shown in the red circle.

The other end of patch cord should attach to one of the ports of the switch. This will create connection between the computer and the switch. Turn on the computer and the switch, you will notice that the LAN port has green LED indicator and it is blinking. Same with the switch, green LED indicator is also blinking. The other patch cord should attach to the other computer and another port of the switch. Now, we are done with the physical connection but this computer is yet not connected.

 2. Configure the two computers.

If you are using Windows 7, follow this:

Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings

Double click the Local Area Connection and Local Area Connection Status window will appear.

Click the Properties and the Local Area Connection Properties window will appear.

Double click the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and new window will appear.

Select the Use the following IP address and type 192.168.1.10 at IP address and 255.255.255.0 at Subnet mask:

Click now the OK and OK again in the Local Area Connection Properties.
Do the same thing with other computer but another IP address should assign. We can assign 192.168.1.20.

Now, go to Start > Run and type cmd and press OK. Type ipconfig and press Enter.

Type ping 192.168.1.20 and press Enter.

If you will receive reply, its means your two computers are now connected. You can now share files, printer and play LAN games.
